Frequently Asked Questions
How College mode works
College mode in the Infinity Sleep Calculator works back from your first class or exam. It takes away the time you need to get ready and get there to find your alarm time, then counts back whole 90-minute sleep cycles, plus 15 minutes to fall asleep, to suggest bedtimes.
Example: for an 8:00 AM class with 45 minutes to get ready, set your alarm for 7:15 AM and go to bed at 10:00 PM (six cycles), 11:30 PM (five cycles) or 1:00 AM (four cycles).
How much sleep do college students need?
Seven to nine hours a night. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7–9 hours of sleep for young adults aged 18 to 25 (National Sleep Foundation).
Should I pull an all-nighter before an exam?
Usually not. A night without sleep makes it harder to remember things and to focus, so studying all night may not help much (Sleep Foundation). Sleep also helps your brain process and hold on to new information (National Sleep Foundation). If time is short, even four cycles (6 hours) is far better than none.
When should I stop drinking caffeine?
About six hours before bed. In a sleep-lab study, caffeine taken 6 hours before bedtime still cut sleep by more than an hour (Drake et al., 2013). That's why College mode shows a caffeine cut-off six hours before your Best bedtime.
