YouTube Thumbnail Sizes Explained
Last updated · By Infinity Tools
YouTube recommends uploading custom thumbnails at 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide. The largest copy YouTube itself makes and serves is 1280 × 720, so that is the size any thumbnail downloader can fetch. Here is the complete picture, from file limits to every size YouTube generates.
The official YouTube thumbnail size
To add a custom thumbnail, your YouTube account must be verified. YouTube Help lists these specifications:
- Resolution: 3840 × 2160 pixels (the minimum width is 640 pixels)
- Aspect ratio: 16:9 — the same ratio used by the video player
- File formats: JPG or PNG
- Maximum file size: 50 MB when you upload on a computer, 2 MB on a phone
- Shorts: 2160 × 3840 pixels (9:16), at least 640 pixels tall; Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer
Uploading a large 16:9 image keeps your thumbnail sharp everywhere it appears, including big previews on TVs and desktop home feeds. YouTube then makes the smaller copies itself, the largest of which is 1280 × 720 (see the table below). A 16:9 image also prevents black bars or awkward cropping.
Every resolution YouTube generates
When a video is published, YouTube automatically creates several downscaled copies of the thumbnail for different placements — a search result, a sidebar suggestion, and a full-width feed card all use different sizes. Each version is available at a predictable URL, which is exactly what a thumbnail downloader retrieves.
| Name | Resolution | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Max-Res (maxresdefault) | 1280 × 720 | Highest quality; only exists if the creator uploaded an HD thumbnail |
| Standard (sddefault) | 640 × 480 | Standard-definition previews |
| High (hqdefault) | 480 × 360 | Search results and related videos |
| Medium (mqdefault) | 320 × 180 | Compact lists and mobile |
| Default | 120 × 90 | The smallest fallback size |
Note that the Max-Res version does not exist for every video. YouTube only generates it when the creator uploaded a high-resolution custom thumbnail. If a video is missing it, the next-best size (640 × 480) is usually available.
Keep important content in the safe zone
Thumbnails are displayed at many sizes, and a few areas can be covered by interface elements. Keep faces and key text away from the very edges, and remember that the bottom-right corner is overlaid with the video's duration timestamp. Anything critical placed there will be hidden.
Design at full size, review at small size
Because a large share of views come from mobile, always preview your thumbnail at a small size before publishing. Text that looks perfectly readable at 1280 × 720 can become illegible at 320 × 180. If you cannot read it on a phone, most of your audience cannot either.
How to download a thumbnail in every size
