How to Download YouTube Shorts Thumbnails
Last updated · By Infinity Tools
YouTube Shorts are vertical videos, but they still have thumbnails — the still image shown in search, on a channel's Shorts shelf, and when a Short is shared. Those thumbnails can be downloaded in the same resolutions as regular videos. Here is how to do it.
Do Shorts have thumbnails?
Yes. Every Short has an associated preview image, generated the same way as a standard video's thumbnail. While you cannot always upload a fully custom thumbnail for a Short from mobile, YouTube still creates the standard set of downscaled versions, and each is available at a predictable URL. That means a thumbnail downloader can retrieve them just like any other video.
One thing to keep in mind: because Shorts are filmed vertically (9:16), the horizontal 16:9 thumbnail is often a cropped or letterboxed frame of the video. The image you download reflects whatever YouTube stored as the preview.
Recognizing a Shorts link
A Short's URL uses the /shorts/ path instead of the usual watch?v=. For example:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID- Shared links may also appear as
https://youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID?feature=share
The eleven-character VIDEO_ID is what identifies the Short. A good downloader accepts the full Shorts URL directly, so you do not need to convert it to a standard watch link first.

Step by step
- Copy the Short's link. On mobile, tap Share, then Copy link. On desktop, copy the URL from the address bar while the Short is open.
- Open the downloader. Go to the Infinity Tools thumbnail downloader.
- Paste and submit. Paste the
/shorts/link into the field and press Get thumbnails. - Pick a size. The Max-Res, Standard, High, and Medium versions load side by side. Choose the one you need.
- Download. Click Download to save the original JPG to your device, or Download all to grab every available size at once.
Why download a Short's thumbnail?
- Research: study the preview frames that top Shorts use to earn taps.
- Archiving: keep a copy of your own thumbnails for a content library or portfolio.
- Repurposing: reuse a frame across other platforms (only for content you own or are licensed to use).
A note on availability
As with regular videos, the Max-Res (1280 × 720) version is not guaranteed for every Short. If it is missing, the tool marks that card as unavailable and you can still download the next-best size. Always make sure you have the right to use any image you download — thumbnails belong to their creators.
