Frequently Asked Questions

How the Image Upscaler works

The Infinity Image Upscaler enlarges a picture to 2 or 4 times its width and height with Real-ESRGAN, an AI model trained to rebuild sharp edges and textures in real-world photos. The model runs on your own device, on your graphics chip through WebGPU when your browser supports it, so your image is never uploaded. If the AI can't run, the tool falls back to a classic resize with sharpening, which you can also choose yourself.

Example: the 640 × 360 photo of Paris in our example becomes 2560 × 1440 pixels at 4×, 16 times as many pixels. Drag the slider to compare it with the original, then save it as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The Infinity Image Upscaler runs entirely in your browser, so your image never leaves your device and we never see it. The first time you use the AI, your browser downloads the model and the software that runs it from our site (about 32 MB) and usually keeps them for next time. Read more in our Privacy Policy.

What's the biggest image I can upscale?

The result can be up to 4096 × 4096 pixels (about 16.8 megapixels), a limit that keeps the tool working on phones too. If 4× would go past it, the tool enlarges the image 2× instead. An image that is already over 2048 × 2048 pixels can't be enlarged further.

Does upscaling add real detail?

It adds detail that looks real, but it is a well-trained guess. Real-ESRGAN learned from photos that had been blurred, shrunk and compressed, so it rebuilds crisp edges and textures and removes JPEG blockiness. It can't recover detail that was never captured: tiny faces or small text may come out smooth or slightly changed. For a plain enlargement that adds nothing new, choose the Classic method.

Which file formats can I use?

You can open JPG, PNG and WebP images, and most other images your browser can show, such as GIF or AVIF (for an animation, only the first frame). Download the result as PNG (best quality, keeps transparency), JPG (smaller files; transparent areas turn white) or WebP (small files, keeps transparency).

Is the Image Upscaler free?

Yes. The Infinity Image Upscaler is free, needs no sign-up and adds no watermark. It works well with small images from our other tools, such as frames from the YouTube Storyboard Downloader, which are 320 × 180 pixels at most.
